Day 2 of Tanoto Scholars Gathering 2014
Day 2 of Tanoto Foundation Gathering 2014 was a day full of knowledge sharing and educational tour about RGE business operations. RGE was founded by Sukanto Tanoto and comprises of a group of world class companies focused on resource-based manufacturing industries. Assets held by RGE companies exceed US$15billion and has a combined total workforce of 50,000 people worldwide.
In Pelalawan, Kerinci, APRIL (Asia Pacific Resources International Limited), a company under RGE umbrella, owns a pulp and paper mill, producing flagship paper brand called PaperOne. More known as PT. Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP), the mill produces pulp and paper products that are shipped to more than 70 countries around the world. Within the vicinity, Asian Agri, another of RGE company, owns palm oil plantations, producing crude palm oil that is used as an ingredient for many consumer end products. Tanoto scholars were given a guided tour on the production, plantation and harvesting processes of pulp/paper and palm oil. In this small town of Kerinci, thousands of livelihoods depend on RGE companies and its operations. A few decades ago, this site was a piece of land with absolutely nothing. It was through Sukanto Tanoto’s vision and perseverance that we have today’s buzzing small town with supermarkets, restaurants and even an airstrip.
Given the tough selection process of Tanoto scholarship recipients (223 out of 8000), the students gathered during this event are the crème of the crop among their peers. They are the brightest students with brilliant minds and energy. It is therefore, a privilege to be part of the Tanoto Scholars Association (TSA) because these scholars are empowered to help others who are less fortunate than them. On day 2 of Tanoto Scholars Gathering 2014, Tanoto scholars were also given an opportunity to visit the communities supported by RAPP and understand in what ways RGE and its companies have helped them.
Sukanto Tanoto’s wife, Tinah Bingei Tanoto always believed that the more you have been given, the more is expected of you. As these Tanoto scholars enter top universities in Indonesia, the journey does not stop there. Instead, it is the beginning to the countless great things and philanthropy activities that are to be done for the benefit of mankind. Today’s Tanoto scholars will soon become Tanoto alumni and ambassadors, extending the beneficiary list to the future generations, with an even greater wave and exponential positive impact!
