Around the Year at Sekolah Mutiara Harapan
The kindergarten through ninth grade students at Sekolah Mutiara Harapan, an International Baccalaureate World School, participate in a wide range of academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs. Located in the Pelalawan Regency in Riau Province on the island of Sumatra, the school was established to serve the children of both the Indonesian and international expatriate communities of employees of Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL). Sekolah Mutiara Harapan strives to maintain high standards of educational quality, and to foster traits such as good citizenship, individual expression, and team-based cooperation in its students. Throughout the school year, both students and faculty participate in a number of seasonal celebrations.
Indonesian Independence Day celebrations at Sekolah Mutiara Harapan are an exciting event. Recent August festivities involved the entire student body, as well as faculty members and staff, engaging in drama and poetry performances, creative drawing activities, and a musical competition. Ramadan observances present SMH with the opportunity for a month-long schedule of readings from the Koran, quizzes on the traditions of Islam, and opportunities to win Islam-themed books as prizes. At Christmastime, students sing carols, light candles, exchange gifts, and participate in Christian religious ceremonies to mark the holiday. Chinese New Year is also a major event for people of Chinese heritage worldwide, including those at SMH.
Sekolah Mutiara Harapan Hari Merdeka
SMH students show great respect for their teachers, particularly on Indonesia’s national Teacher’s Day, held annually in November. Students typically greet their teachers with cards expressing their appreciation. In the past, they have surprised their instructors with performances of plays and sports competitions.
